BGE customers will see their energy bills rise by $26 per month in the first half of 2025 due in large part to controversial multi-year pilot programs and the multi-billion dollar gas pipeline replacement program. Advocates call on the state legislature and utility regulators to end policies that are leading to excessive utility profits and massive rate hikes.

The Maryland Public Service Commission finalized an order to implement the EmPOWER Maryland energy efficiency program with changes required by a 2024 law. While the Commission approved new and expanded incentives for efficient electric equipment such as heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, regulators kept subsidies in place for fossil fuel equipment proposed by Washington Gas.

The Public Service Commission and legislature should end state-accelerated cost-recovery policies that allow utility companies to quickly recoup their money. These policies cause steep increases in utility rates.

Today a coalition of consumer, interfaith, health and climate advocates submitted public comments urging the Public Service Commission to strengthen the state’s energy efficiency program.

A coalition of elected officials, labor, consumer, and climate groups is urging the Maryland Public Service Commission to protect residents from excessive rate hikes by ending the multi-year rate plan pilot program which launched in 2020.

The Maryland Office of Home Energy Programs (OHEP) is preparing for a record number of energy assistance applications this year. OHEP expects to assist 270,000 households. Last year, it received 243,252 applications.
